1. About Barn
Barn (“barnlocal.com,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a technology platform that connects local community members who wish to buy and sell locally produced goods. Barn is not a food producer, seller, distributor, or retailer. We provide a communication and listing service only. All transactions occur directly between buyers and sellers, and Barn is not a party to any sale.
2. Information We Collect
Information you provide: When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and profile photo (if signing in with Google). When you create listings or send messages, we store that content. Sellers may optionally provide location data, contact information, and payment method details (such as Venmo usernames or cryptocurrency addresses).
Automatically collected: We collect basic usage data including IP address, browser type, device information, and pages visited. We use cookies and similar technologies to maintain your session and improve the service.
Location data: If you grant permission, we may collect your device’s geographic coordinates to help you set your listing location. This is optional and used only with your explicit consent.
3. How We Use Your Information
- Provide, maintain, and improve the Barn platform
- Create and manage your account
- Facilitate communication between buyers and sellers
- Display listings and approximate locations on maps
- Send service-related notifications
- Prevent fraud and enforce our Terms of Service
- Analyze usage patterns to improve the service
We do not use your information to make decisions about the safety, quality, or legality of any products listed on the Platform. Barn does not inspect, verify, approve, or endorse any product, seller, or listing.
4. Information Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We may share information in the following limited circumstances:
- With other users: Your profile name, photo, listings, and approximate location are visible to other users. Contact information (phone, email, exact address) is only revealed after verification steps.
- Service providers: We use trusted third-party services including Supabase (database and authentication), Vercel (hosting), and Google (authentication) to operate the Platform. These providers process data on our behalf and are contractually obligated to protect it.
- Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, court order, or governmental request, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Barn, our users, or the public.
- Business transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
5. Location Privacy
Barn is designed with seller privacy in mind. Sellers can choose to display only an approximate area using a configurable privacy radius rather than their exact location. When an exact address is provided, it is protected behind a verification step and only revealed to authenticated users. We encourage sellers to use the privacy radius feature to protect their home address.
6. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), secure authentication via OAuth 2.0, and row-level security policies on our database. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as fraud prevention or legal compliance).
8. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data
- Deletion: Request deletion of your personal data
- Portability: Request your data in a portable format
- Opt-out: Opt out of non-essential communications
You can manage most of these through your dashboard. For formal requests, contact us at the email below. We will respond within 30 days.
9. No Responsibility for User Transactions
Barn collects and displays information provided by users but does not verify the accuracy, truthfulness, or completeness of any listing, product description, seller claim, or user profile. We are not responsible for any information exchanged between users or any consequences arising from transactions arranged through the Platform. Users are solely responsible for evaluating the accuracy and safety of products and for conducting their own due diligence before any purchase or sale.
10. Children
Barn is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from individuals under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a minor, we will promptly delete it.
11. Third-Party Links
The Platform may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of these third parties. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of material changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a revised date. Your continued use of the Platform after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
